USPS to Introduce Oversized Package Surcharge

Updated: Feb 11, 2021

When USPS announced new shipping rates that go into effect on January 24th, 2021, they also announced a new $100.00 (USD) surcharge fee for oversized packages for the following mail classes:

· Priority Mail Express

· Priority Mail

· Parcel Select

· Parcel Return Service

· USPS Retail Ground

· First-Class Package Service

To determine if your package is oversized, USPS uses their Automatic Package Verification (APV) system, a system that has been used for the last several years to identify shippers that are under-reporting weights and dims. The APV system identifies parcels in the mail stream that exceed the maximum mailable size limit (combined length and girth greater than 130 inches) and then require these shippers to pay this surcharge fee before USPS completes the package delivery.

Remember, USPS provides some of the best rates in the industry and does not add surcharges for fuel, residential delivery, or regular Saturday delivery. And by using blue™, you gain access to deeply discounted USPS rates and can print labels without the additional fees charged by many ePostage platforms.
